Scales Mound Elementary and Junior High Schools Kick Off

Accelerated Reader with a little STEAM!

On Thursday, September 14, elementary and junior high Hornet readers enjoyed creating, collaborating, and participating in hands-on adventure with the Kendall Hunt Mobile Play Lab from Creative Adventure Lab out of Dubuque, Iowa.   Students enjoyed building bridges, tunnels, furniture, walls, and much more with the giant foam blocks, lifesize LEGO blocks, and regular LEGOs.

Scales Mound School District takes great pride in its Accelerated Reader (A.R.) program.  Each year, students in first grade through eighth grade set a quarterly reading goal with the mindset of reaching all four quarters.  A school-year theme, various rewards, and fun activities are used to entice students to set and meet their goals.  This year’s A.R. theme--CREATE--combines reading with creation, experimentation and collaboration.   Our goal is to spark student imagination with hands-on opportunities to explore new concepts in STEAM areas--Science, Technology, Engineering, Art/Design, and Math.

A special thanks goes out to the Scales Mound PTO for funding the Mobile Play Lab and a great deal of the A.R. program at Scales Mound.  It is the goal of the Scales Mound School District Library’s Accelerated Reader program to mirror Scales Mound School District’s mission statement: From the top of Illinois, we are preparing today’s learners for tomorrow’s world by empowering all to reach their full potential.
