Good afternoon,
In following up with the e-learning email that was sent out this morning, teachers are preparing materials in case there is a need for an e-learning day tomorrow due to inclement weather. Please note, no decision has been made at this time regarding an e-learning day tomorrow. School will be in session as normal tomorrow unless information is sent out noting that school will be closed.
Thank you and take care,
Dr. Matt Wiederholt

Scales Mound School District #211
E-Learning Day Plan
Public Act 101-0012 signed into effect on July 1, 2019 amended the School Code (105 ILCS 5/10-20.56) provision on alternative learning / e-learning days. Schools can now use alternative / e-learning days in lieu of emergency day if they are adopted by school board resolution and verified by the applicable Regional Office of Education.
As in the past, Scales Mound School will be utilizing this approach to address inclement weather and emergency days. An Alternative Learning Day / E-Learning Day may be utilized during up to 5 days of school attendance that would need to be cancelled due to inclement weather. Our school calendar allows for up to 5 emergency (snow days) to be added on at the end of the school year. We will potentially be using up to 5 of those days if needed as Alternative Learning / E-Learning Days.
What is an Alternative / E-Learning Day?
An Alternative Learning / E-Learning Day approach allows us to provide an “instructional day” even if the school is not open due to weather/road conditions/etc. On these days, teachers will send home assignments, lessons, and enrichment activities for students to complete. There may also be links established by teachers that allow for students to complete work online at home. If the Internet is available, students at the junior high and high school grade level are required to complete assignments provided by their classroom teacher. Teachers will share information with students regarding the assignments and expectations prior to the use of an Alternative/E-Learning Day.
Each grade level looks different every day, so this Alternative Learning / E-Learning Day will look different at each grade level. The teachers will provide lessons/activities that are grade level appropriate and a continuation of what has been happening in the classroom. Teachers will still be engaged in school related activities and able to answer student/parent questions 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
We understand that Internet and digital access may not be available to everyone, and that some students may not be able to complete all online tasks assigned by teachers from home. Not all activities will need the Internet to be completed. Students would be given two days to turn in their work upon return to school. If they do not turn in their work assigned on the Alternative Learning / E-Learning Day, they may not receive credit and may be marked absent on that day.
Sincerely,
Dr. Matt Wiederholt
