The first day of the 2026-2027 school year is Wednesday, August 26, 2026.
Scales Mound Families,
As we begin preparing for the upcoming school year, I want to share an important update regarding student cell phone expectations during the school day next year.
Recently, schools have seen the growing impact that cell phones and personal devices can have on student learning, focus, social interaction, and overall well-being. After thoughtful conversations with staff, parents, administration, and students, our district will be implementing an updated phone policy beginning next school year. The new Scales Mound Cell Phone Policy is attached to this email message.
The goal is simple: to create learning environments where students are fully engaged, connected with their peers and teachers, and able to focus without the distraction of personal devices. I understand that phones are an important part of communication for families. If there is ever an urgent need to reach your child during the school day, families may continue to contact the school office, and we will ensure messages are delivered promptly.
I recognize that transitions can take time. As we begin the school year in fall, our staff will work closely with students to teach, reinforce, and support these expectations with consistency, patience, and care.

NEW STUDENTS or STUDENTS REGISTERING FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE DISTRICT WILL NEED TO COME TO THE SCHOOL OFFICE TO REGISTER. Registration for students new to Scales Mound will take place on Wednesday, May 13th from 3:30 PM - 6:30 PM, in the School Office. Please bring proof of residency and birth certificate at this time. Information regarding payment of registration fees will communicated at a later date.

AOK Families, Food, & Connections Jo Daviess Event
At the event, participants will get to sample four different dishes:
Lasagna
Chicken Enchiladas
Chicken Fried Rice
Smothered Chicken
After sampling the meals, families will get to prepare those same dishes as freezer meals to take home with them.
In addition to tasting and creating these meals, participants will:
Learn about different cultures
Engage in meaningful conversations with other parents
Receive a community cookbook to take home
Have the opportunity to win small kitchen appliances such as griddles, crockpots, pot and pan sets, air fryers, and more
Children are encouraged to participate as well! They will help prepare the food and get to decorate their own apron and chef’s hat.
I’ve included photos from our Stephenson and Carroll County events. This truly is an incredible event, and we hope you will help us spread the word.
